Academy Provides
Resources to Adopt E-Prescribe Technology
Over the next four years, Medicare will provide incentive
payments to physicians and other practitioners who e-prescribe, starting
with a 2 percent bonus in 2009 and 2010, 1 percent in 2011 and 2012, and
0.5 percent in 2013. In order to qualify for the bonus, a minimum of 10
percent of your Medicare allowable charges must come from the office
visit codes (eye codes, evaluation and management, or consult codes) to
qualify for the bonus. A practice must have a qualifying system and
successfully report at least 50 percent of the time, however the Academy
recommends that you report on EVERY patient encounter that generates an
office visit code. Beginning in 2012, eligible professionals who are NOT
successful electronic prescribers or do not qualify for one of the
exemptions will experience a 1 percent reduction in payment as penalty.
